Topic: wide 5 adapter

  Does anyone know a source for a wide 5 wheel adapter to a small bolt pattern? I only need one adapter plate so my tire dealer can balance some '36 wheels on his balancer. I was unable to find any local shop or truck tire dealer that could balance the tire and wheel assembly as a unit on the car. I understand at one time Dick Spadaro sold them but, as we all know, Dick is now fighting major health issues.

Needless-to-say, I am open for some suggestions!

  Some balancers will work by using a spare drum and hub. The drum should be balanced separately to assure that it doesn't affect the reading before adding the wheel and tire.

  I bought one on Ebay a couple of months ago. Unfortunately I haven't found his contact info. It is aluminum and nicely made. It was $110 plus shipping.
I will look somemore.

  I seem to recall that the early VW wide 5 wheels use the same balancing adapter as the early Ford wheels. The last time I had the wheels/tires balanced on my '36, a VW adapter was used...

  wmsteed: The "wide-fives" on VW's and 36-39 Fords look a lot alike because they were the product of John Tjaarda's creative pen, which is why late 30's Zephyrs/Fords etc. have styling clues that are very similar to the VW Beetle. However, the VW's 8.07087 inch bolt circle vs the Ford's 9.50 inch circle are not interchangeable.

  MICHV8: My apologies to you and wmsteed. You are correct in your 10.25 bolt circle diameter. I believe the VW diameter is correct however, as I actually looked it up.

  So........would one of the Speedway adapters allow me to get all five of the wheels and tires currently mounted on our '36 properly balanced by a competent local shop?

If so, which one would be the best choice?

Has anyone out there successfully used a Speedway adapter to balance their 1936 or 1937 or 1938 or 1939 wide five Ford rims?

  Grant, there is no reason why a Speedway adapter wouldn't work, other than operator error. The adapter itself should be balanced first, in a permanent manner for future use. For those who are OCD like me, each bare wheel can be balanced, noting the heavy side as reference to offset the light side of the installed tire. This step is made more important these days with the elimination of lead weights, as the new weights are so d*mn big. Lastly, what should be a no-brainer... use all 5 lugnuts to mount the adapter!
