Topic: 1939 Ford Windshield HELP!

MrPhat40    -- 11-03-2014 @ 9:07 AM
  Dear Early Ford V8ers,

Starting the process of installing new glass and the seal in a 1939 windshield frame.
Please offer some hints.
I am told to lubricate the setting tape for the glass, what is the recommended product for this:
motor oil
vegetable oil
silicone spray
soapy water spray
other?

As for the windshield frame seal any hints besides patience and perseverance?

Should I heat up the rubber seal in a tube of hot water?
Use a lubricant?
If so:
any of the above
silicone spray, an oil of some type or push it in dry?

Lastly the c clips
which I assume cover the split between the two frame half's,
do I remove them during the process and install when everything is complete or do I leave them slightly above the split and the gently push them into place once the glass and seal are installed?

Thank you all so much for your help.

I used soapy water for the window to body weather seal and window cleaner spray to help with the glass into the frame with setting tape.

Properly installed. NO sealant is required nor necessary. Most silicone base sealers will delaminate the glass.
I was taught by a friend who owns the local glass shop to only use glass cleaner as a lubricant when installing seals. It is, as you know 'slippery" and will not suds during the next few times it gets wet.

Make 100% certain ALL of the old seal is out of the channel. this is important.
