Topic: water pumps

After returning home from a 200 mile round trip to Route 66 Festival I noticed the right side water pump on my 51 custom tudor is weeping (not yet leaking) a little and probably was before I left home. I have ordered a pair of new water pumps from Carpenter but it will take some time to get them painted and installed. In the meantime I was planning to drive the car to Newport,In Hill Climb this weekend, (150 miles round trip). The car runs great and the temp gage is dead center. Am I crazy to even consider this or should I chance it? My mechanic who will install the new pumps thinks I would be all right (take a few gallons of water) but I'd like to hear thoughts from some of you old pros. Thanks. Tom

IMO I think it would be OK to make the drive. As your mechanic said, take some water along and check occasionally. Keep an eye on the engine temp also.

Just thought I'd let everyone know I did make the 165 mile trip without incident thankfully. The RH water pump is weeping now about the same as it had been. Have the new water pumps now and will have them installed as soon as they get painted.

Tap the front of the pulley with a hammer to see if that stops the leak. There may be a small piece of dirt/rust in there between the seal and the shaft. Tapping on the pulley sometimes dislodges it.
