Topic: Starter Drive issue and possible sources

I have what appears to be the start of a starter drive problem. On occasion, the starter will spin without engaging the engine. It seems to be pretty intermittent so I'm thinking that it's probably a Bendix spring/sticking related thing, At this point thinking that I should just replace the drive. I have a '39 Deluxe, 85 hp. and notice from my manuals that there are a couple of possible starter drive configurations. I want to order the right part so wondering if there's a sure fire way to determine the right part without pulling the starter? Also, any suggestions on suppliers? I don't want to end up with some el cheapo aftermarket with an early fail rate. Thanks!

If you want to replace the drive, order the original type from C&G.

You may be able to get many more years out of the current drive by removing the starter and cleaning the spiral on the drive.
