I have the Ford V8 book and combined with some misc postings understand that my '47 would normally have had its same body color inside the engine compartment, fender wells etc. but perhaps I'm wrong. My original and subsequently re-painted exterior and door frames are maroon and my matching firewall appears original (chips exhibit bright red primer). However my fender wells, engine compartment fender panels, trunk bracing and interior of the engine hood are original black. Is some of this not original ?

DR Let's think about this logically. Ford (and their competition) was trying to mass produce vehicles. Except where necessary they were not going to mask item to paint two colors. So your entire body and what ever was bolted or riveted to it would be all one color. There is some thought that the under side of the floor that was mounted on a skid might not have been painted body color. Certainly the visible side of the body in the rear wheel wells would be body color. As for the hood and front fenders, both sides would be body color. That leaves the inner front fender panels. These apparently were painted black. My guess is that whoever repainted your car decided to go Ford one better and paint all the unexposed sides of loose pieces black.

Thanks 42wagon .... Just curious about the car's history. The black painted underside of the hood looks convincingly original, and combined with a slightly ill-fitting passenger door (which uses a different key and the lock cylinder has a cover), I'm suspecting an auto accident may have resulted in replacement of those body parts, maybe even the passenger front fender. Regardless, not interested in turning this into a concourse model. Its a good and dependable "driver" and I like the electrical improvements.

I inspected the underside of the hood closer and it clearly looks like someone (hastily) painted its interior black instead of using the original maroon color. Must have been done after the car's last repaint. Too bad; a little more effort and/or caring knowledge would have had better results. I'll add that to my future project's list.
