Topic: 53 Sunliner brake lights

The brake lights on my 53 stopped working recently- the turn signals funct ok as do the parking lights. They were functioning erratically prior to this. I believe that the problem could be the switch located on the master cylinder- at least this looks like an easy source to eliminate. When the switch is removed, is there a significant brake fluid leak? Should I tape the threads with teflon tape when I replace the switch? Thanks!

Your symptoms are typical of a failing brake light switch. You should only see a drop or two leak unless the brake pedal is mashed. Just remove the old and screw in the new.

Teflon tape is generally not recommended for connections in a brake system because of the possibility of pieces getting into the brake fluid.

You can test the switch by pulling off the wires and shorting them together. If the stoplights come on, it is the switch. If they don't. the problem is elsewhere, perhaps in one of the connectors between the switch and the turn signal control. The stoplights are usually routed thru that control, so a set of contacts may be the cause. To replace the switch, just unscrew it. Little any fluid will escape. The shank of the switch is a pipe thread and doesn't need sealer.

Just s little tip on the brake light switch. I like to fill the little port in the switch with brake fluid befor I install it. Not totally necessary but doesn't hurt either. It might avoid an air lock in the switch. JMHO.
