Topic: horn rebuild

i acquired a set of trumpet horns today at a swap meet and they work fine but were dirty, upon dissembling them i found quite a bit of scale and crud on the diaphragms and a little on the circuitry. does anyone have any literature on how to rebuild horns? at first glance it looks like the nuts that are on the diaphragms are "staked" on the bolt that holds it on. any one familiar with any of this?

thanks
joe

Joe, I subscribe to the theory of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Over the years, this theory has allowed me to enjoy and drive my car while conserving my financial resources for restoring the car the way I want it and fixing problems as they occur. You can spend a fortune on fixing things that are not broke and another fortune fixing the things that you fixed.

If you change any of the adjustments, you will affect the tone and the operation of the horns. The armature spacing adjusts the tone and should not be changed. The contact adjustment should only be changed when new contacts are installed.

well i absolutely agree with you!!! however i figured it out and was able to strip it down and clean and rebuild it. i counted the number of turns on the adjustment nut so i could reassemble with a very close to correct gap.

looking back you were right. but at least now i know they should be good for another 70 years.
