I am having problems with my ignition coil heating up and it was suggested that I have a ballast resister which is a good idea also someone said that it was under the dash originally .
Does any one know??

  What year and what engine?

There are two reasons to retain the ballast resistor. One is to drop voltage to the coil from 6 volts to about half that amount. It allows the coil to function even when system voltage is low from a weak battery, poor charging system, and use of the starter. The other is to function as a kind of voltage regulator. The windings of the correct resistor are made of Nichrome wire, such as seen in toasters and electric heaters. As system voltage increases with engine speed, the winding heats, increasing their resistance. This, in turn, protects the coil, points, and condenser from burning up. If you don't have a resistor, vendors such as C&G have them available. Be aware that many foreign made resistors are inferior. C&G has NOS units, $20. Ask for 18-12250-N Their order line is 800/266-0470.
