Can anyone tell me what the triangular "pocket" on the right front corner of a 85 hp '40 Ford oil pan is? Is there suppose to be a verticle slot in it? Thanks SVMsr 1940 Ford

That is the crankcase breather. Yes, the slot is needed to exhaust the fumes.
