Topic: 53 OD

I recently purchased a 1953 Sunliner with OD. Not being familiar with OD I just recently noticed that the kickdown switch, which should be beneath the accelerator, is missing- there is a floor mat over it. The OD functions well except there is no kickdown when I floor it. Has anyone seen this done before?

Some prefer to omit or remove the kick-down device/feature which normally does not inhibit operation of the OD.

The purpose of the kickdown switch is to momentarily short the ignition so the solenoid can release the balk ring to allow disengagement. Otherwise, the OD won't release for passing when you need to downshift. It isn't difficult to install and connect, and will increase the ease of operation.

  Jim,
If the OD is working ok and you need to downshift, you can quickly turn the ignition switch off and on to downshift until you get a switch to install. This assumes that the solenoid is connected and working.
