My father recently passed away, and among his posessions is a flathead Ford V-8 engine. The story is that this engine came out of a Ford car of mid 40's vintage (pre 1949) which was wrecked sometime about 1960 . Casting numbers on cylinder heads: 59A-B. Water outlet is in the center of the head. It has 24 stud-type headbolts. Casting number on bell housing: A1491. Water pumps are located in the block (not in the heads). I would like assistance in identifying the year of this engine for a future sale or trade. Thanks Steve

Steve, I think you're pretty close to identifying all of the visible characteristics of the 1946-1948 Ford/Mercury 59AB V-8. Mac VanPelt's website has a lot of information available for these engines. Here is the link to the '46 to '48 59A page: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_specs-85to100mid.htm
