Back in 1971 I purchased a new Dodge Sportsman Van E/W a 3 speed standard/manual transmission. When I serviced this van for the first time I found that the transmission was filled with automatic transmission fluid. I asked the service department at the dealership where I bought the van if this was a mistake made at the factory. They told me "no", that all standard transmissions were filled with ATF from the factory and to continue using it. I owned that van up until 2006 with 250,000+ miles on it and never had a problem with its transmission. So, I guess my question here is - "why not ATF in the transmissions of our old Fords?" Don't laugh!

Because they were designed to run with 140 gear oil, not ATF. Tom
