Can the left rear axle be removed without pulling the whole unit out from under the car on a 48. Thanks

No. The gear at the of the axle has to be removed from the spider cage. This requires unfastening the axle housing from the banjo. If you are replacing the axle, be sure the new one is correct. Count the teeth on the old and the new one to be sure.
