I recently purchased this car. It is a good driver, not misrepresented in any way, but while looking at the flathead engine, I noticed the name Mercury stamped into the drivers side head. Is this then a Mercury flathead engine?

Not necessarily. Those Merc heads interchange with the Ford heads. Someone probably had a bad head and used the Merc as a replacement.

External Identification for the Merc is the heads 8CM for 49-51 EAC for 52/53 Also they have 4 bolt carburetor mounting, but as mentioned they all interchange with Ford and they only way to know is to disassemble it.. (at least pull one head) and measure the stroke. My guess is if it has the 4 bolt carb, there is a good chance it is a Merc with a Ford head.. For What ever it's worth the Ford heads are a bit higher compression.
