Topic: Removing stick shift from toploader

I posted this on the truck forum and had no responses. Thought I'd try here since the technique is probably not unique to trucks.

I plan to remove a 4 speed transmission from a 1950 F2 that has been sitting and has no engine. Looking for a general description of the technique or reference for removing the stick shift from inside the cab.

Also looking for tips on performing a preliminary inspection on the transmission while it's out to see if there is anything obvious preventing the trans from functioning. Thanks in advance.

Unbolt the lid with the shift lever and lift it straight up until the shifter forks are clear. Observe the position of the forks to aid in putting the top back. Most of those transmissions are very rugged. Usual problems arose from worn parts in the shift tower at the base of the lever. Not much is observable with the box still in the truck. When you drain the remaining oil, let it run thru a sieve to see if there are any parts of teeth or other signs of damage. If you feel any roughness when you turn the shafts, it is likely one or more bearings is worn.
