Topic: Water Pump Grease and Generator Oil

  Hello everyone,

My question is concerning the grease used in the grease plugs on the water pumps and the oil in the generator of my '35 Phaeton. Do you use the same grease in the water pumps as you use in all the other grease plugs on the car and also what oil do you use in the generator? Is there a trick or method to putting the grease and oil in these two locations?

Thanks,
Kenneth

I do not use the same grease in my '35 water pumps that I would use on the chassis. It is recommended to use a low melt point grease in the pumps that melts at 212°F or lower. This is important to prevent radiator tubes from getting plugged up if you should use a high temperature grease with some getting into the coolant.
I usually use a light weight oil, like 3 in 1, in the generator bearing resoviors. Sometimes while on the road I will just drip a couple drops of motor oil from the oil pan dip stick into each bearing resovior.

Don't over lube the water pumps, or the excess will contaminate the coolant. If using a grease gun, only one pump of the gun is required. For that application, we use Mystik JT-6 gun grease. It is virtually waterproof, and a great use for boat trailer wheel bearings. We buy it by the case at a local farm store, but some NAPA stores have it, or can get it it.
