  I have a 52 Mainline with the 239. I'm experiencing backfire at idle. Could this be that the jets on the carb need to be turned out a bit? Timing is good, just put new points in. I just replaced one side head gasket, but don't think this has anything to do with backfire.

  Sounds like you have a valve sticking at low speed. Use a vacuum gage to check then a compression tester to determine which cylinder is giving you problems.
What caused you to change the head gasket? You may have debris from the old head gasket under the valve seat.

  WHERE IS IT BACKFIREING,TAIL PIPE OR CARB!! TAIL COULD BE A VACUME LEAK,HUNG UP VALVE.... CARB YOU PROBEBLY HAVE A BAD POWER VALVE OR ITS GASKET IS LEAKING. need more info . ken ct.
