Topic: Locking lug nut

daoust    -- 06-30-2014 @ 6:05 PM
I was at the Eastern National Meet last week in Gettysburg, PA. In one of the 47 Fords I noticed a special nut that was used on the bracket that holds the spare tire in place in the trunk. Apparently it is some type of locking lug nut with a thick square washer. Does anyone know exactly what this nut is called and where they can be found? Any help appreciated. I'd like to find one for my car. A picture is attached.

Thank you.

You might try Roy Nacewicz at; www.fordbolts.com. I would also keep an eye on e-Bay and maybe run a want ad on this site and in the V-8 Times.

That is the same nut that is used from 1937 and forward that the locking cover fits over. They are somewhat common and you can find them at swap meets frequently.

Thank you. I emailed Roy and he does not carry them. He also suggested ebay. After some more research, I believe the Ford part is either 78-1462-A or 77-1462-A. The nut I need is tapped 1/2" ID.

  It appears 78-1462-A is the one, 1/2-20, 1.16L x .75hex
The one in your photo is not the correct one since it has a wheel nut chamfer. The one pictured below is also incorrect it is 78-1462-B.

Daoust, What model '47 Ford was sporting that spare tire "hold down" assembly?
Something does not look quite right there -
Namely that square washer. That washer is used at the generator mount.

The owner said it was a VERY EARLY 47 convertible but it looked exactly like a 46 convertible to me.

Are you saying the the square wqsher should not be there at all? Just the locking lug nut?

That square washer is NOT called out for the tire application. I am not 100% certain whether or not a round washer was used in these years.

Check your post on Fordbarn if you have not done that lately, "nospartsman" has posted pictures of his collection of locks and related parts. Looks like all new parts to me.
I also don't believe that square washer is an actual part used in Fords locking system.Probably just "rigged" as a spacer.

I have sent "nospartsman" a private message through Fordbarn. I'm a buyer of the nut and a functioning lock if someone is a seller.
