Topic: Is Mobile 1 a good idea for my '34?

carguy    -- 06-22-2014 @ 12:15 PM
I use Mobile 1 in some of my older vechicles but I would appreciate comments re using it in my stock '34.

I want to replace the engine oil (30 wt) and transmission & differential (90 wt) and am considering Mobile 1 15W50 for the engine and 75W90 for the tranny & diff.

So what's your feeling good idea or not?

If your motor is really clean inside it probably is OK . Might consider 85-140 on the gear lube though .

Full synthetic is great oil, but the same quality that makes it fine for modern engines works against you in antiques. The primitive seals don't work well in containing synthetics, particularly the rope type. When we rebuild an engine, we tell the customer that we will not provide warranty against oil leakage if synthetic is used.

Thanks Guys. So based on your comments I think I'd best stick with the straight 30 weight in my engine just like the manual says.

But how about the transmission & differential? Stick with 90 weight Hypoid gear oil here too?

Factory spec for 1934 as you can see in the pics is SAE 160 [ 140 ] above freezing . I live in WI and it can get below freezing here on occasion but I just leave the SAE 140 in all year . We occasionally get snow also here and the Fords hibernate so the thick stuff doesn't bother . It WILL make shifting when cold a pain if it is 10 degrees out but CA shouldn't have much of that . FWIW I use SAE 140 in tranny , u-joint , rear and steering box . Works good but don't overfill the u-joint with it as it will leak [ as you can see 4oz is spec ] . Some will also beat the GL-5 is bad drum but I don't buy into that .
