Topic: side curtains for '35 Phaeton; need detail to inst

70mikeroach    -- 06-10-2014 @ 8:08 PM
I am a new V8 owner and my car, a 1935 phaeton is currently in an upholstery shop for installation of a LeBaron Bonney upholstery kit. I would like to do side curtains, but so many questions. . . . I only want to do it right. The car has a nice top, but what is this bracket for? I can't figure out how to attach the photo. Anyone feel like helping out?
Mike

Go to the LeBaron Bonney catalog (lebaronbonney.com) and search for side curtain rods. If they are like the earlier Fords one end goes into a socket in the door and the rod supports the side curtain. Either that or, based on your description, it could be a part off of your neighbor's Chevy. Are you going to buy your side curtains from LeBaron Bonney?

LeBaron Bonney used to have the rods available. I wound up with the car that the originals were copied from..

If you buy your side curtains from LeBaron Bonney, they will send you a starter kit which consists of the headers, stanchion covers, paper patterns and an installation instruction manual. You, (or your upholsterer) will have to modify the patterns to custom fit your car, and return them to LeBaron Bonney for the preparation of the curtains.

Look up Arel Brown (New York) in the Club roster. He had some extra original '35-'36 side curtain rods in the not-so-distant past.

This photo shows a tab that is attached to each side of the top bows. Who knows what they are and what do I do with them? Ignor this photo. See next.

this photo shows a tab that hangs down from each side of the top bows about middle of the top. What are they for? What do I do with them?

"Ïrons", are the supports of the side curtains on a phaeton. They fit in the holes in the tops of the doors and slide up inside the side curtains. In additon to the side curtains, there is a piece that fits between the windshiled and front side curtain, another piece that goes above the side curtains and then the rear quarter window curtain. It's not a quick job to install them in the rain. Learn to look for drive thur's when it's about to rain.
It's two step process to get them made, measuring an then ordering,

That tab in your photo originally had a rubber covering on the end with the three small holes. its purpose was to prevent chafing of the top material by the ends of the steel bow. You're lucky to have them as they've never been reproduced and were used only on '35-'36 phaetons.

You can restore the rubber by dipping the tab in the liquid rubber (repeatedly as the original rubber was about 1/4" thick) available in hardware stores to coat the handles of tools such as pliers. The original rubber color was black.

Thanks for info, 1934 ford. So, you're saying there are seperate pieces that are above the side curtains? How do they attach to the frame? or are they attached to the top itself? Do you know of any good pictures of the side curtains on a vehicle?

Mike, Here are some photos from a previous discussion showing the bracket restored and in use. Hope they help.

Don, thanks for the pics. They are a big help. Is it possible to send more detailed pics of the side curtains and how they attach to the top. Thanks again.

The 34 must be totally different than the pictures shown for the 35. Suicide doors required a stip at the windshield and anther along the top for the curtains to close against. All hooked in with "pop-a-dots". I got patterns from LaBaron Bonney.

Hello Everyone, It's been a long time since I posted here. Don Rogers has provided some good photos. (You can just see my Dad in a couple of those shots, he was a good guy.)

The side curtains on our '36 Phaeton are ten pieces total (there are eight stanchions). There is one small piece that fits on the windshield post, a long thin one that hangs between the doors and the side of the roof, a triangular one that goes at the rear, and the two pieces with plastic for the doors.

As others have said, when you're making a new set, they are built to fit the car.

One other note, we had to do some refitting of the stanchions that fit in the door posts to fit the curtains we had. Some filing and bending.

Here is a link to another photo of our car with the curtains on.

I found some more photos on this FordBarn thread. You'd need to join to see the pix I think.
