Topic: Stuck clutch on 40 flathead

rradar    -- 06-10-2014 @ 12:27 PM
Just took my 40 sedan out of mothballs and got it started and runs fine BUT when I tried to put it in reverse, could not get it to shift. Then I shut off the motor and put the shift lever in reverse and put the clutch in and started the motor but gears were not free so I shut it down.

Remembering a similar time from the past when a Mercury had the same problem: CLUTCH STUCK TO FLYWHEEL. So is there any quick fix to unsticking it so I don't to replace the clutch disk???

Thanks, Radar

Now the experts might not agree, but this is what I've done. Place the car in 3rd gear, ignition off, then rock it (the car) back an forth until the clutch pops loose.

I've had this happen on a car that has sat for a while. The disc sometimes sticks to the flywheel like a pancake to a skillet. If rocking the car doesn't work, try stating the car in low, with the raer wheels jacked up and hold the clutch in,rev it a little and it might let go.

  CLUTCH UNSTUCK!!!!

Thanks to you guys and your helpful info I was able to free up the clutch!!

Using a floor jack I lifted the car up. Then with the shift lever in high gear, I started the motor and sped it up to higher rpm, when I hit brake pedal, the clutch popped free.

WHAT A BLESSING!!
Again, Many thanks to club members!!!

In the future, I'd suggest you block the clutch when the car will be stored.
You got lucky this time. Next time? Maybe not.
Place a piece of plywood against the seat (near the floor) and place a 2" x 4" between the depressed clutch pedal and the ply.
