Topic: 40 exhaust repairs

I must replace a broken right side exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe on a 40 Ford. I assume that the cross over should be replaced also since it is the original. Two questions, what vendor is recommended for the two pipes and any tips for removing the manifold?

A word of caution here. In removing the defectve exhaust manifold, it is an almost sure thing that one or more bolts will be broken. They have become annealed by many years of hot/cold cycles, making them soft. Almost always we have to wire weld a bolt to the remainder to get them out. Unless you have the equipment and experience, it is a job best left to a good muffler shop. The crossover and right side pipe is available from most good vendors such as C&G in California. It is also advisable to replace the muffler and tailpipe if they are old and show signs of external wear.

I would use the original cross-over if possible. no repops are made will fit good as that one. Soak, soak, soak days before removing manifold. Front 2 are bigger than the rest. Use plenty of never seize when installing bolts use lock washers. ken ct. PS I use new grade 8 bolts never had a problem removing after.

Bob and ken. Thanks for the responses. The reason I posted was because of the probability of breaking a bolt. My fears were confirmed. In my area there are no good muffler shops. They are cut and weld shops (pipes and mufflers) and I am sure they will break bolts.
Bob, Is there room to weld to a broken bolt without removing the engine even at a good muffler shop? At this point I may take it to Lexington, Ky or Knoxville, Tn if I can locate a good shop at those locations.
