Topic: Removing pistons and rings still seated

Can pistons be removed from a V8 flathead 21 stud engine and put back in and the rings still be seated. I will be carefull not to rotate the rings but they are going to move some when I compressed them to put pistons back in. thanks

As a personal opinion, if you have the motor that far apart why not install new rings?

I agree with Tom's question. Be aware that when new rings are installed, the cylinder walls must be deglazed so the new rings will seat. That process is akin to honing, but doesn't remove metal, if properly done. If the rings don't seat, the job will likely result in worse performance than the old pieces.

if you are taking it apart, you might s well check a few things out,
on the rings on the pistons, do the rings have movement in the piston ring gland, up and down ? sloppy ?
if they do relace the pistons,
I have done several engines, and hardly anybody checks this, it also important,
hope this helps, 37RAGTOPMAN
