Topic: Repairing a rear axle bearing

I have discovered that the bearing surface on one of my rear axle housings is badly spalled and will need to be repaired. Can someone suggest a shop in Connecticut that has a big enough lathe to turn an axle housing half and then can press on a new bearing surface and has done this work before?

I have NOS RH axle housing 51A-4010 for sale at $250, if you need it. Bill Large 596-677-4790 Michigan

I guess I should have specified. The housing half I need to repair is the left hand one. Maybe someone else following this thread needs a right hand one. Thanks anyway.

You need to be careful about who's bearing sleeve you use, since all are not created equally.
I'm guessing that you are working on a '42 station wagon but not really sure. It may be less costly in the long run to find a good used axle housing than it is to find someone to repair that bearing correctly.

I agree with John in that you must get someone that KNOWS how to do this labor.
My advice? Send the housing to Connelly in California. He'll do it correctly and reasonably.

I repaired my axle bearing on a crankshaft grinder in our shop. The benefits are it can be centered to turn true and a radius can be ground in for strength. If interested, I'm in Northern NJ.
Yes, I used John Connelly's sleeves.I am trying to attach a picture, if it doesn't work I will try again later.

I have read that there are some sleeves out there that are not properly hardened. Be careful.

I'm with JM. Once you spend a lot of money to fix one bearing surface you still have a pretty old one on the other side. It may well be more economical to replace the entire rear axle with a good used one. That's what I concluded and did.
