Are these car more desireable than a regular 1953 Ford conv.? What color should the engine be? I saw one the other day that said it had a mercury engine. Was the Mercury flathead engine the same as the Ford flathead? It looks identical so I assumed it just came out of a Mercury.

Yes the 1953 Ford Indy Pace car was special. There were a certain number produced to be available to Ford Dealers. To be certain it is a Pace Car, check the data plate (on driver's door jam) for the code SS. This code was for the special exterior paint and interior color. As far as I know, the engine should have been Ford, not Mercury.

The main external differences between a 53 Ford and Mercury engine are the heads and intake manifold, which are easily changed to Ford parts. Internally the Mercury had a 4" stroke, compared to the Ford 3.75" stroke. Again the cranks are interchangeable. The actual Pace car had engine improvements, so it could get out of the way. It is in the Henry Ford at this time. There were 2,000 replicas made and I believe they all had stock Ford engines. Tom
