Topic: 1946 FORD CONVERTIBLE BACK WINDOWS

I am trying to adjust my 1946 convertible top and I can only get the rear quarter windows to roll up 3/4 of the way after the top is up. Is there a "trick" to getting the windows all the way up and have the top up, too? I am open to any and all suggestions!

The top adjustments are many. The inner rear quarter panels which have the holes for the window crank need to be removed. You will then see the bolts that attch to the top. By adjusting the bolts you can move the entire top any way you want. Be very careful though, because a little move one way can make a large difference somewhere else. I used a porta power to help me when I did mine. There are several other places to make adjustments also which will become apparent to you as you move the top. The 2 long springs also have 3 different positions. All in all quite a difficult job. A job much better left to an experienced person, but they are very hard to find.

That is typical of the '42-'48 convertibles. The radius of the quarter windows seems to be a bit different than the opening presented by the top bars. The "knuckle" hinge is good for adjusting the window in and out horizontally, but can't change the arc. Once you start to try doing that, you will have a mess. Be sure that the rubber seals on the top bars are correct, and that the ends are trimmed to mesh with each other. The best way is to raise the windows before you bring the top up, and don't lower the windows unless the top is down, or the header is unclamped enough to provide slack. If you try to force the windows up, it is likely you will damage the regulators, which are almost impossible to find. We have had to weld on new teeth several times on those that were mishandled.

Beg to differ with you but, the radius can be changed by loosining the bolts that hold the top assembly to the car and moving the entire assembly, but it is correct that you can get a MESS. When you do this you actually do change the radius of the rear quarter windows but, unless you have a real problem, do just what Superreal says. Unlatch the top and lift it slightly when you want to raise or lower the windows. The 3 allen head bolts that hold the knuckle hinge only allow a small amount of up and down movement. The eccentric bolts on the bows only really allow you to adjust the fit at the top of the front windows. Yes the regulators are easy to break and are just about impossible to find. They only fit 42 - 48 Ford Merc conv.

We weren't able to change the radius enough to get the quarter windows to fit the top bars despite lots of trying. We came close, but ran the risk of damaging the new top, so you are better at it than we are. It may be due to the fact that many of the eccentric bolts in the top were missing, and we had to duplicate them to reassemble the top. I was so happy to get the top to settle correctly on the header, I decided that further attempts were not worth the effort. There is a template in the body book for those windows, but it apparently requires a massive shift in the whole mechanism. If opening these windows is important, it would be much better to do it before the top covering is in place. The geometry of the folding top is a gigantic puzzle, any way you look at it.
