Topic: Flathead Start Up After 3 Years

My '46 Flathead V8 was rebuilt and run on a test stand just short of 3 years ago. It has not been run since the test stand run. It has now been installed in the car. Are there any tips or recommendations before I attempt to start the engine. Thanks for any help - Jimbo

In this case I would leave the plugs out , squirt a little oil in each cylinder and spin it over with the starter until I had good steady oil pressure . Leaving the ignition off of course . Re-install the plugs and go as it should have gas by now . You only asked about starting so I will not bore all with the meticulous details of getting a car going . I am also assuming you have not let moisture , dirt , critters and - or whatnot into the engine .

You might also want to consider doing a compression check while plugs are out to make sure no valves are stuck open.

3 yr old gas in the tank?. Don't even think about pumping that cr*p thru the fuel system. Drain the tank, see how much cr*p comes out. Flush it with several gallons of clean fuel. Then disconnect the line at the carb and try starting the engine on a remote tank. Allow the fuel pump to push gas thru the lines into your drain bucket. I'd pull the top off the carb and check the bowl for sludge too.

All that old gas will need to go to your local haz-mat disposal place.
