Topic: 1938 E-Brake Cable routing

Frosty    -- 04-23-2014 @ 8:13 PM

I'm having a problem re-installing my emergency brake cable. It seems to have shrunk. I'm about 3/4" short of getting the retainer on at the hand lever bracket and I'm hard up against the brake pedal.
I'm wondering if anyone has pictures of where the cable is routed after it leaves the clamp at the side of the transmission. My cable measures 60" overall. I've seen a cable on Mac's site that measures 61 3/4". Does anyone know if the that sleeve is longer than on the 60" cable. That would solve my problem.

Can you adjust the length at the "Y" under the tranny to give yourself more cable?
Mine is a '39 but probably about the same routing of the cable. I'll try to get under it this PM and take a picture or two.

Hello Topless, thanks for the reply. The '39's are different, at least the one I looked at. The '39 cable goes under the frame, mine is on top and is held onto the side of the transmission at the connection to the drive shaft tube.
My cable is long enough, but the conduit sleeve that covers the cable seems to be too short.

  Hi Frosty:

Attached are photos of my 1938 Standard V8 60hp "E" brake. Hope it helps.

Photos are from before I converted it to 46 brakes. I still have many of the original old mech. brake parts in the garage.

Hi 1938cr. I can see in picture 011, that the cable doesn't run under the firewall, but comes up inside. Do you remember how it was attached to the firewall? That routing would give me lots of length to install into the bracket. Right now I've got mine outside the firewall, coming through the hole in the firewall at the bottom of the insulator. Again, thanks for the pictures.
Thanks also to Topless for your picture.

  Hi Frosty:

The photos were taken as I disassembled the floor. I believe it to be as installed by the factory. No bracket on the firewall, it was held in place by the firewall pad and the floor. I am including one more photo that shows it as assembled, before I started. The bump in the firewall pad is the cable.

Hi 1938cr. I've installed it between the insulator pad and the firewall. Lots of room to tie in now.
In the last picture, what is the wire wrapped cable coming through the firewall, to the upper left of the wood floorboard?

Thanks for your pictures and help.

  Hi Frosty:

I'm glad things are fitting better now. I believe you are describing the speedometer cable. Have a great day.

Charlie
