The flathead engine building gurus on Fordbarn tell us that + 0.060 is the limit on the early 221 engine blocks, prior to '37. No idea on sleeving. If you post this question on Fordbarn, someone will let you know. John

I would not sleeve an early block to achieve a bore larger than .062 oversize. You will have overheating problems. Tom

I have a 33 and a 34 with .060 33-34 blocks in them and they work fine . This message was edited by David J on 4-19-14 @ 11:53 AM

The overbore depends on the sleeve size outer diameter, the usual largest being .060. Any larger has to special ordered from a vendor such as Mahle. Same is true of pistons and rings. It is very difficult to' bore old engines as they more often than not will have a sand hole from a core shift when made. At our shop, we do lots of boring. We fill the water jacket with a special material prior to boring to support the cylinder walls so the finish will be possible with the hone.
