Topic: main jet sizes

I've been following len47merc's post, and it brings up some questions: In these years what size main jets were installed in the v8 holley carbs at the factory? Were different sizes installed [at the factory] for different altitudes? since most of our gas today contains ethenol, does that make any difference on what sizes to use? And,does anyone know a way to check the operation of the power valve while the carb is on the car and running?

Usually closing the idle screws all the way in points to a bad PV or gasket if it keeps running at all. Its getting a gas supply from the PV to keep running. Jet sizes are not always what there marked especially genni hollys. Their are no such jet as a #51 they mike out with a pin gauge to approx. .050-.0505 not #51. Ive been installing .049 and .050 true hole size for yrs now and work out better than stock jets. OMO. These are not Holly jets, their out of California drilled to accual # size. ken ct.

If it is a power valve problem, both sides of the intake would be affected. The last time I chased this problem, the cause was a small piece of Teflon tape that had been used by the owner, aad lodged in a jet. It is also possible that a small metal shaving from a connector is obstructing a jet. The passenger side of the carb feeds cylinders 5-2-3-8, the driver's side of the carb feeds 1-6-7-4. Be sure the nozzle bar on the offending side is not clogged. It is likely the carb body will have to be checked off the car to find any obstructions.
