There is a small U shaped bracket that goes where the hood support arm and hinge the bracket is about inch & a quarter wide and about I inch & one half long. The problem is the bracket has 5/16 holes same as the hinge but the support arm has a 3/8 hole which leads me to believe it uses a shoulder bolt there. I have a picture but can't figure out how to post it. If anyone has seen this hooked upi I would appreciate any input. Thanks, Rick

Is this what you're talking about? (Attached picture) If so, I believe this is the shoulder bolt: http://cgfordparts.com/ufolder/cgcat.php?searchtype=Search&x=x&year_choice=47&searchtextdesc=hood+bolt&searchnumber=48-6756 This message was edited by Old Henry on 3-17-14 @ 6:05 PM

I just took my bolt out to see what I have. It's a 5/16" carriage bolt (no shoulder) and the hole in my knee brace is 5/16" the same as the hole in the hinge and the U shaped piece. Nothing on mine is 3/8". Don't know what to tell ya. Sorry. This message was edited by Old Henry on 3-17-14 @ 9:02 PM

Looking at this more I see that the hole in the top end of my knee brace is 3/8" for a shoulder bolt there (no U bracket). I wonder if you have your brace upside down?? It should have the spring at the bottom as shown in my picture.

Take a look in the green book p.370 shows a diagram of the hood and associated hardware. The U-bracket 11A-16779 is used 41-48 (see p. 621) go down the page and there is listed the hardware with Ford P/N in the back of the book is a detailed description of the hardware sizes shoulders heads etc. see if you can find what you need there. Just my opinion, but I don't think any harm would be done to install your knee brace with the 3/8" hole at the bottom with the 5/16" bolt going through it, the hinge hole, and the two U strip holes. I actually don't have all of the right shoulder bolts on mine and it all works just fine. And with that U strip hiding the holes, no one but you would know it's not exactly right. The correct bolt is a 1/4" X 28, with a 3/8 shoulder. The clip goes over the junction of the firewall bracket lowest hole and the bottom link of the hood support. C&G lists them as part # 3110. Lots of those brackets were drilled out to 3/8" when the original bolts were lost. There should also be a wavy washer between the link and the bracket to allow free movement. Many connectors in the hood support have holes in the heads for a safety wire that prevent them from working loose because they can't be fully tightened, or the links will be locked. When we find a hood that won't close at the firewall, almost always it is because the wrong bolts were used.
