Topic: 1938 ford starter

My 1938 ford has a 24 stud motor, I installed a new starter, the car is a 6 volt negative ground, the problem is the bendix sticks into the flywheel and will not release until the car is rocked back and forth in 3rd gear. The old starter performed the same way. This problem occurs once out of ten attempts to start it. I'm looking for suggestions.

Pull the starter and carefully examine the teeth on the flywheel ring gear by turning it. Chances are you will find one or more areas where there is damage. In some cases, the starter can be shimmed enough to allow a release. If your starter has the new style drive, it may be the source of the problem. There have been reports that those drives cause problems, and a conventional "Bendix" drive will work better.

You also may be missing the front support from the inboard mounting bolt to the nearest crankcase bolt. Without it, the torque produced by the starter will twist the bendix away from the flywheel gear enough to jam it up.

TGT says thankyou for your help.We found a burr where the starter attached to the fly wheel. Ground the burr off and the starter hasn't failed since. Great advice!
