Any suggestions on what I can use to replace the pad which fits on top of the air cleaner on a 1936 car?

Jon, Choreboy copper Scrub Pads are what you want. They are spot welded in one place, but open up easily to fold to the shape of the air cleaner. This works very well for the '37+ air cleaners, which open easily, but for your '36, you'll have to figure out how to get the mesh inside.

Go to a fabric store, piece of felt will do it,kind of on the heavy side. ken ct.

Be aware that the "floppy" pad in the late 30's air cleaner can obstruct the air intake causing the engine to falter or stop.

I went to Ace hardware a got a piece of screen door mesh and folded it over to the desired thickness. It was free as they just cut a piece of a used screen door they just repaired.

I assumed he was talking about the felt pad under the top most cover,not the copper mesh????? ken ct.

Hi...Yes, I was referring to the pad which fits under the top most cover and not the mesh which fits in the perimeter of the air cleaner. Thanks Ken for the suggestion to use felt and supereal for the caution on using thin pad.

Ken, was correct on his first post. I have never seen that round felt pad, that locates on top of the air filter, under the domed cap, reproduced by anyone, but as Ken said, you could make that from a thick piece of felt. It would be good if you could get some basic measurerments from someone else's '34-'36 air cleaner that does have that stock pad in place.

I purchased a piece of felt (1/8” thick; F-5 medium hardness) and cut it to fit the top of the air filter (photo attached). No problem with pad being too “floppy” and obstructing the air intake after driving about 5 miles.
Should I lightly oil the underside of the felt pad with motor oil or K&N air filter oil to increase efficiency?

I would leave it dry. It's not a filter. It's there to help deaden sound.

Jon,
I just replaced the copper mesh in the top hat air cleaner.
I didn't like the price of $16.00 for the replacement from
the online Early V8 stores. I was in a Dollar Store and walk
by a copper chore pad for $1.00. I looked at it and bought
2. I opened the package of 3 at home and found the copper mesh was in a ring. I stretched the ring to make it look like a larg donut and inserted into the area where the mesh belonged.
One was not enough to fill the space so I used all three. Looks
good to me and the mesh is shiny copper. Hope it works for you.

rblong, apparently you didn't read any of the replies to the question! I suggested that also and it turned out he wanted the felt pad, not the mesh. The Choreboy does pass muster on the Concourse, though!
