The 35-36 book schematic shows wire Y leading from battery side starter switch to the horns and wire BLY from the lighting switch center post (my wire was cut, but the clip had been soldered)to the horns. I assume Y is the hot and BLY is the ground. However, the schmatic also indicates a wire YG coming from the horn button to the lighting switch center post. It looks like all I have is a solid rod in the steering column terminating at the spider???

Yes the yellow wire Y comes from the starter switch to both of the horns and is battery (-) The blue and yellow wire BLY also goes to the horns as well as the center position of the light switch. On the bottom of the horn rod is an electrical connection and insulator, inside the rod is a wire leading to the other end of the rod and the horn button that goes to ground when pushed (+). Fairly good explanation except that these Fords are (usually) positive ground. So to be accurate, the wire between the horns and the battery goes to the negative (hot) terminal. And when the light switch is grounded, it makes the connection to the positive (neutral) terminal.
