I bought a set of reproduction hood hinge bolts for my 37 coupe hood which are 1/4-28 x 1/2" long. The hood and hinges were off the car when I bought it. The hex heads are drilled for wire locks. The bosses on the underside of my hood have holes that appear to be quite a bit smaller and I really can't tell what kind of threads are there due to the rust. Do I need to drill and tap these bosses in the hood to accept the new bolts?

Maybe it wasn't clear as to what I was trying to say, but I went ahead and made the fix the way I had planned. Using a #3 drill, I drilled out the bosses in the hood and tapped each hole with a 1/4-28 tap. The drill cuttings seemed to indicate that I was drilling into fresh steel leading me to think that the original hood hinge bolts were sheet metal screws. Anyway, I've included a picture
