Got a problem. V-8 engine and overdrive transmission are in as of last summer. Tonight I went to hook up the clutch linkage. Everything went in okay except the release rod needs about 1-1 1/2 more inches of thread before it is snugged up to the release lever. The release lever is also a little on the sloppy side, but it stays in the general area of the throw out bearing.

I suspect the release lever is not engaging the throw out bearing correctly and to fix the problem the transmission has to come out. Any other suggestions, or am I missing something? Thanks. Jim Farrell

Check the release lever and the fork that pushes the throwout bearing for any looseness. Also examine the release shaft bushings. Any slop in this area is magnified by the geometry of the linkage which is required to permit easy release of the pressure plate. If the holes for the pins in the shaft have become egg-shaped from wear, a common problem, replacement of the shaft and pins is necessary. We always do that, anyway, when the clutch is renewed.

Supereal, thanks for the help. In the meantime I took the transmission out. I'm embarrassed to say that the hub and throwout bearing were in backwards. Now everything is back together, clutch linkage is in and it works.

I wondered about that. Usually it is discovered when the spring that pulls the release bearing doesn't fit.
