Topic: '38 ford 85 hp head gaskets and dist.

Hi guys. A friend of mine is O/H his engine and has purchased a felpro gasket set. The head gaskets look like they are a composition material with a aluminum or tin cover over them. Do these need to be soaked or coated before installing? Also, the set has two short, white in color, seals for the front cover and two longer, thinner ones, what are these for? Does this engine have a rear seal? and finally, how do you remove the inner cap (with four wires)from the dist. body? He stated he tried to pull it out but it won't budge and he don't want to break it. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A wire clip holds the distributor caps to the distributor. Just flip the wire off of the cap and you should be able to easily pull the inner cap and outer cap off together. The inner cap is held to the outer cap by a small "O" ring.

Here are those clips and what they look like (not the same dist but these are how the caps are held on a 1938 Ford-same clips). Push those wire clips off of the cap and the cap will come off.

Here is a drawing of the set up. Those wire clips or "bails" must be moved off of the cap so the cap can be removed. Good luck.

Dang! These photos are not working out. Go to the Mac Van Pelt Web site and look at the drawings. I can't get the images to come up big. Too small to look at.

Hi Tony. Thanks for your input. We had removed the outer wire clips by just pushing them down, then the outer cap came off but we cannot seem to get the inner one out. should it just pull out or do those nail-type pins hold it in? Thanks again.

Janman, the inner caps are difficult sometimes. NOS caps have swollen over the years and usually require filing for clearance to the metal body of the distributor. Removal can be as difficult as installation for the same reason. Careful prying, one side then the other, will get it out. Then the other side can be tapped out with a small rod through the distributor.

Nothing holding the inner caps in place except the clearance to the body. Remove the coil and you should be able to tap them out. Don't worry about breaking them, they usually have to be replaced and are available.
You may wish to spray both sides of the head gaskets with "Copper coat"
The 81A engine does not have a rear seal as the front does. The gasket kits are made for more than one engine so you will have extra gaskets left over after the job is done.
