Topic: distributor 51

I have a 51 F1 pickup. I just received a rebuilt distributor from Dennis Carpenter. The distributor shaft housing is 1/2mm too large for the shaft receiver hole in the engine, and so, will not go into it. How can this be? I have greased it to see if I might force it, but no. I have a very accurate DIGIMATIC caliper which confirms the measurement differential. I will call Carpenter when they re-open (closed due to the snow). Anyone ever have this problem?

Many thanks

Peter

There were 3 different distributors used from 48-53.The 7RA-12127 was used in 1948-1949 and is used with the 8BA front timing cover. The 0BA-12127 Distributor was used only with the 0BA front cover. The 8BA-12127 distributor was used with the 8BA front cover.

The 0BA parts were used in some 50 and 51 vehicles. The 0BA front cover was aluminum and the 8BA cover was cast iron.

If you are talking about an 8RT V-8 engine, maybe this will help: The 7RA and 8BA distributors look alike. They are steel and have a driven gear at the bottom of the shaft. These are used with a cast iron timing gear cover. The OBA distributor is aluminum and has a shaft that extends below the gear. This shaft extension fits into a machined hole. The OBA distributor is used with an aluminum timing gear cover. If you have the aluminum timing gear cover, the 7RA and 8BA distributors will not fit and vice versa.

Is the rebuilt distributor like the one that you are replacing?
