As we all know,the temp guages on the '40s models read C to H. Obviously C means stone cold so does H mean you are at 212 F ? I checked the temp on my '48 with a laser thermometer with the needle half way between C and H and it read 160 to 170 degrees along the heads. Does this sound normal?

Yes. Dash gauges are not precision instruments.

My dash gauge reads 1/3 at 170°. If you want to know the temperature more precisely you can add a mechanical gauge. I put mine in the glove box to be out of sight until needed: http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88541

I had a problem with my 41 - always showed hot. Bought another gauge (NOS) - same problem. I ended up getting a thermal gauge. Both sides were 180 deg +/- a few degrees. Now having a backup, I took my gauge apart - see attached. This is when I noticed the calibration points. I put it back together, less the gasket on the back so that I could access the two adjustment ports. One port sets the temperature, and I believe the other adjusts the sensitivity or range. Hooked it up to the sending unit and with the operating temp at 180 deg, I adjusted the needle to mid mark. Then I reinstalled it back in the dash. Now works great and I have a spare. Len

Our factory guages seem to have their own personalities and say what they want to. I recently noted in the forum .... have an under-dash thermo guage plus my stock '47 electric guage. The last/recent owner evidently put the thermostat's in upside down. During engine warm-up the coolant readings go to about 212 degrees, it hangs there only a few seconds, the thermostats open and the guages readings plunge. (no boiling occurs) To my point and your first message .... when my thermo guage hits about 212, the stock guage is a touch above the "H" mark. When the stat's open and the coolant temp drops, the stock guage settles a touch above the middle mark and the mechanical at 175. They pretty much stay there except for long up-hill climbs etc. I don't know what the temp spec is for my Stat's but they could be either 160's or 180's. If your temperature guage always reads to the hot side, it is likely the wire between the gauge and the sender is open, or the two terminal sender is open. The gauge goes to the "hot" side when the ground circuit to the sender is interrupted.
