Topic: 1941 Radio Tone Dial

Dads41SuperD    -- 02-07-2014 @ 11:29 AM
I'm a new owner (6 months)of a 41 sedan coupe. I recently had the radio worked on. It sounds great, but it's missing the center dial or tone dial. All of the parts stores seem to carry the volume and tuning knobs, but I have yet to run across the center dial. It looks like it is a chrome colored piece. The radio is a Sparton radio it that makes a difference. I have attached an image of what I'm looking for.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Nice looking radio - a keeper ! I suspect you'll have to be patient in finding the part or may have to buy a second radio for parts. Get the word out and call as many repairmen as you can.

Thanks for the reply Drbrown. The picture of the radio is from a fully restored 41 for sale I found on the internet. My radio is not quite as nice and is missing the center tone dial.

Check Classic Radio Repair at www.classicautoelectric.com or 620/241-6927. They are a V8 TIMES advertiser.

I sent an email off as suggested. Does anybody have another option?

OK - www.classicautoelectric.com does not have this piece. They may be able to make driver-quality out of aluminum, which I may have to do it there are no other options. Thanks to Joe for the quick response.

I'm hoping for another source. Hope someone can help.

There is a '41 radio in the classified ads now. Maybe you and the seller could have a discussion.

Good idea. Got an email back that it just sold.

Time to think out of the box ... After I'm done working on any of the four familys' cars for the day, my other hobby is model railroading. Like many scale modeling hobbies, people learn how to make molds from different materials and cast their own parts using "plastic" based resins. My guess is a material like that could, without excessive abuse, hold-up as a radio knob. Colors are not a problem and one can machine a hole in the back side to receive the knob shaft. Go googling and investigate something like this. If you feel handy, find an owner of a '41 radio, who would be willing to let you made a mold of their part. Once you have a mold you could provide others with the product. Dan

This might help .... search over 70,000 articles using key words like "molding technics" "molding materials" .... http://trc.trains.com/en/Train%20Magazine%20Index.aspx. If any web site there requires a membership ID to view any articles let me know .... I have those and get us in. Dan

Drbrown. I get an error when I try the link. Can you test it? Thanks
Len

Sorry about that. been a while since I used that link. I will find a good one, or two. Dan

Sorry for the delay. Here's a NJ company that sells molding, casting supplies and paints .... www.micromark.com/4067

The "4067" at the end of the web address saves you $4.95 in S&H. Option: Phone 1(800)225-1066 and mention that code # if you place an order.

Let me know how you make out. Dan
