Topic: 1938 Fan Problem

Frosty    -- 02-02-2014 @ 8:09 PM
I had the fan on the bench for a cleanup and repaint. When I turned it right side up I noticed fluid had come out of the hub.
1. Am I correct in assuming a seal is worn out?
2. If it's a worn out seal, can I replace it by taking the bolts out from the fan side?
3. Is it a press fit?
4. Where can I buy a seal?
5. What do I replace the fluid with?
Any and all answers would be appreciated

I wouldn't worry about it. If your generator become noisy, a couple drops of oil in the spring loaded trap door at the rear of the generator will take care of it, and is probably the source of the fluid you see. I must have dumped a quart of oil in there before finally having my generator rebuilt.

While painting your fan, I hope you examined it closely for any cracks near the hub. Vibration will lengthen any cracks till a blade comes off, then you will have real problems.

Do you have the fan that mounts to the generator pulley or the one that mounts to the generator bracket?

TomO, the '38's, both Standard and DeLuxe, have generator moiunted fans.

I guess my fan is not a 1938 fan then. It mounts to the generator bracket.

That's why I asked the question. You sounds like you may have the 42-48 fan that takes oil in it's hub.

The Ford instructions for service are to use 1 oz of hypoid gear oil and turn the fan oil hole is at the bottom to drain the excess and then replace the plug.

Supereal has a better method, so I hope that he will update this message with his method.
