Topic: Ignition Switch on/off plate replacement

I want to replace the on/off switch plate on the steering column ignition switch on a 1938 Deluxe. Has anyone done this? How did you remove the rivets? Drilling?

The sides of the small rivets are serrated and twisted. If you can grab the head (removing the old on-off plate will give more room) sometimes they will come out like a screw. Remove the back of the drop (ignition switch) and look for the hole to be drilled all the way through the drop body, if so you can use a small pin punch to drive the rivets out. If the holes do not go all the way through or the head twists off the rivet then you will have to drill the body out.

Try using a tack puller like the one that upholsters use to remove the tacks. It has a very thin edge with a slot for the tack.

Drive it under the head of the rivet and gently pry up. It should allow the rivet to twist out.

Thanks 40 and TomO. I have the new plate and the twist rivets, so I know what you're talking about. I sort of thought that would be the procedure but wanted to check first.

As suggested, I took off the old plate which left sufficient room to get my vise grips on the rivets. A little pull while twisting and they came right out.
