Topic: No start no spark at plugs

  I'm a newbie so have heart, lol, car started but took a while ran rough at first then started to smooth out I stalled it when I started to back out. Now won't start flooded then waited no start. Checked spark at plugs no spark. I know I need to check coil but how? Take wire off and turn over to see if it sparks from opposite side of engine is tough? Then need to check what, ignition. Is there a book to show how to check these things and with what? Ohm meter yes but what should I see for readings? I am green on this engine. John

  Check for power at the coil. If you have a voltmeter, put the negative lead to the coil input, and the positive to ground. With the ignition switch in the on position, you should see between six volts, and three volts, if the points are closed. If you get no reading, work the ignition switch as you watch the meter. Old Ford ignition switches wear a groove in the contacts, causing loss of power. Loose connections at the switch, or the resistor on the inside of the firewall, behind the dash, should also be checked. Let us know what you find. There are other places to check.

  After doing what superreal suggests, and it all checks out, I would suspect the coil, points, condenser, or the wires running to them, including the high tension wire from the coil to the dist. cap. Also, the plug wires could be corroded where they go into the cap. It sounds like you need a ford factory service manual, or a Motor or Chilton's manual for these early engines, or a person with some experience with early V8s.

  Thank you super, will check coil tomorrow if not too cold in garage. What can I expect at resister in voltage?
Wires new ,new champion plugs, had old timer do distributor but he doesn't have timing Mach so I will see Ken and get rebuilt distributor. All timed per Ken . If amp meter, gas gauge moves when ignition turns on. Doesn't that say good ignition switch?

  Yes, I would say your switch is good, but check voltage at the coil, in case there is a bad connection between switch and coil. You might try going on line to Ford V8 techno scource. There's a wealth of information there.

  Thank you very much Supereal, .found that I had no reading. Went to resistor and found I had not completed the assembly of one wire. Wife called me for lunch I think and I forgot to complete the second terminal with wire. I'm embarrassed. But learned a lesson to leave a note on bench at my age when a project is not complete.   That's good news, John. In my 8th decade, I learned long ago the value of making notes to myself. Now, if I could only remember where I put them! As to the ignition switch, there at separate terminals for the gauges, etc, and one for the ignition. The body of the switch and the movable "wiper" are readily available. It is possible to sand the body down enough to permit better contact, but replacement is cheap, and better. Have fun with your car. As a newcomer, I hope you have lots of fun driving and fixing your Ford!

  I read that for every gray hair, you lose one brain cell. Now that I am losing my hair does that mean that I will get some of those brain cells back? I sure could use some.
