Topic: Cowl vent

flathead48    -- 01-04-2014 @ 5:32 AM
What looked like a simple operation has turned out to be the opposite. I am putting the cowl vent hook up back in my 48 and the shoulder bolts are smaller than the holes in the bracket on the top inside of cowl. Does anyone have a picture of this setup or any info on this. Thanks, Rick

Old Henry, those pictures were great. I have question, in the last picture where the bracket bolts to the cowl. The hole is much bigger than the quarter inch shoulder bolt. Does this cause any movement or does the tightening of the bolt prevent this. I really appreciate you going. Through the trouble of taking those pictures . I enjoy your road trips , keep them coming. Happy New. Year , regards, Rick

It's been a while since I installed mine so I'm not sure which bolt(s) you're talking about. Are you talking about the two, one on each end of the bracket that the vent is attached to that the bracket swivels on when the vent opens and closes or the single bolt the attaches the lever mechanism to that bracket?

Old Henry, I am referring to the brackets welded to the top of cowl the hole is very large but I can figure it out now. Your pictures show me where I had the main bracket wrong. You have done enought and I really appreciate your efforts. Thanks again and happy motoring. Regards, Rick

  This drawing may help you.

Bolt P/N 355359 is a 1/4-28 x 1" cad plated bolt without a shoulder.
The nut is a lock nut, the special washer is a 1/4" washer with a diameter of 3/4".

The hole in the bracket is over sized to allow for adjustment.

The parts book diagram that shows how the vent is attached to the cowl brace is not complete. The 355359-S shoulder bolt with a spring/wave washer under it's head goes though the vent arm from the outside. Then a thick flat washer with a waffle patter on one face goes on each side of the big hole in the welded bracket under the cowl. Lastly, the Y shaped brace and a 1/4 fine thread locknut go in the bolt. The big hole in the bracket and flat washers allow the vent to be aligned in the opening of the body.   If you have replaced the vent gasket, be aware the many of the repros are too thick and stiff to allow the vent cover to go "over center" and properly lock.

Thanks for reposting that Tom. I had thought when I found the post that something was wrong with my laptop.

I replaced the gasket in my '46 with one I purchased from Dennis Carpenter. It fit like it was from Henry. The key is the "over center" adjustment to keep it snug. It's a pain to get to, as you know but stay with it.
