Topic: Intake Number Locations

I found a difference in where the intake is numbered on my two flat heads why is this? One of them is numbered between the carb. and fuel pump (rear of motor, and the other between the carb. and generator (front of motor). The picture is of the one I have not disassembled, it also has a 8BA and an EAB head.

The "8RT" indicates that the manifold came from a truck. They are usually interchangeable with passenger car manifolds, but have extra ports for brake boosters and vacuum governors, etc.

Well, so this motor has been pieced together beacuse it has both 8BA and EAB heads. Here is a pic of the other intake.

The 8BA and 8RT intakes and heads will fit either block. In some cases the 8BA heads have a slightly higher compression ratio, but not always. Opening an old engine is always "interesting". Many flatheads were pieced together from junkyard parts, particularly during WWII, when parts were scarce to non-existant. We just had one in our shop that had a mixture of floating and non-floating rods. For most good quality rebuilds, about the only parts reusable are the block, pan, heads, crank and cam, along with the manifolds. The rest are commonly either wrong, or too worn to put back in.

The difference in where the casting number is located, is probably due to when and where the castings were made. Your numbers indicate that the manifold could be used on the Ford car or truck (8BA 8RT)with the 239 cu in motor.
