I have recently purchased a '38 convertible sedan and understand that about 2,740 of them were built worldwide. Does anyone know of a data base that would give an estimation of how many exist today?

My books show that in '38, 2,743 type 81A-740 were built. It was the only Ford that year to cost over $900. They are sometimes confused with the model they replaced, the phaeton, which didn't have roll up windows. 42 of the convertible sedans were equipped with the 60HP engine, while the phaeton had 67 with the small engine, out of the production of 1,169 cars.
There is no reliable way to determine how many exist today. A common "rule of thumb" says that about 5% of most old cars are lost each year. Given that the convertible sedan was a low production model in a low production year, with a total output of 410,048, it is safe to say you have a very rare car. Most price guides show them at between $38-50 thousand, which seems low, given that the 2 door convertible is valued at almost as much.

3841, since you are a new '38 owner you might want to purchase the V-8 club's 38-39 book. It's a very comprehensive book on the '38-39 cars and will help answer many of your questions regarding your convertible sedan. The book can be purchased on-line on the front page of this site. Or you can order by phone by calling 707-226-5256 between 8:00am and 6:00pm PST.
