Just in case I need to after all other things check out, how to check for bad starter. Is it also true that the engine has to be jacked up on a 1941 super deluxe to get starter out? John

I am sure others will offer advice on checking. I would just take it to a good shop that knows these unless you have the skill and tools needed. You do not need to jack the engine up to remove the starter. After removing the battery cable, unbolt the brace on the oil pan and then loosen the bolts from the engine but do not remove the bolts completely. This is so the starter remains together. Then first pull the starter forward and tilt it in toward the engine slightly to clear the flywheel ring gear then lift it clear and out. And hang on! once it is free it is heavy. Don't have your head under it!
