  Where is the correct location of thermostats on a 35 Ford also what is better a 160 or 180 I never drive in the winter or when it's below 40 degress? Thankyou

  As close to the W/P's as practicle. I would use 160 which they never made. I have a pair rated @ 155 for $95 plus shipping. ken ct. PM me on Fordbarn or email. igadore@sbcglobal.net.I also have another pr that are unmarked. All have been tested and are ok. All are nos.

  160° thermostats were available as after-market replacements. Ford offered 155°. Regardless, I have found this range to be the best choice.
They can often be found on eBay (NOS) for about $50 a pair. I sold a set on eBay about three weeks ago. They were NOS and tested. Brought $47 and some odd change.

  I don't know about the stock earlier cars but I have had good luck with NAPA THM 111 stats in my 32 with Edelbrock heads and on my stock 40s. They just fit the diameter of the water outlet on the head. I drill and tap 3 4/40 holes in the water outlet lip and hold them in with stainless screws. I also drill a small bleed hole to let water (and air when filling)through before they open. Works well for me. These are 170 degree and inexpensive.

The thermostats go in the hoses above the water pumps on each side '33 to '36. The same stats fit Lincolns but have a rubber sleeve to make them fit the larger hose. I use 160's.

You could use 180's if you have a water type heater and it probably will warm better. If you have a heater tap in the hose above the water pump, put the stat above that tap. It just slides in tight enough to not move. Some come with a clamp but I never use it.

I use Bridgeport Mfg., "5 Standard" which is a 160 degree stat. The boxes are marked "5 Standard". If the box is marked "High Temp" it is a 180 to be used with a heater. The are no marks on mine but they are NOS in the box. The car with 160's will settle out at 155 to 175 in the top tank with hood open one side and at idle for 30 minutes, at 72 ambient.

Also, a plus to running the stats is the driver side water pump will not blow coolant out at 50+ mph. My '35 Cabriolet has a 4:11 rear end.

They are easy enough to check on a kitchen stove using a cooking thermometer. Mine pop open at 160 slicker than butter. My temp gage on the dash runs in the center with 160's at a sustained 50-55 highway speed. This is slightly cooler than just sitting at idle for 30 minutes from a cool start.

When I see them for less than $15-20 for the 160's, I buy them. If your car overheats, solve that first. The early V8's, with an "open" non pressure system, do not boil under normal highway conditions. Same goes for a cool start on the drive for 30 minutes.

  Thankyou all for responding, I do not have a heater so I guess 160 stats are fine a while back I found two thermostats in the barn made by the Dole Valve Co. Chicago they are marked 160 and fit very good inside my hoses, both test out good.Thanks again
