My 1941 turns over very intermittent and very slow I have 6.42 volts on battery. I tried to see if plugs would spark but car not hardly turning over ? Was able to get spark from coil and that's it I'm stuck Car turns over maybe once then hesitates then again then no more but battery still has voltage like 6.23. VoltS lefT. Please I'm not very good as to electronics and need support. JohN

Start with the battery cables and make sure they are the proper size for the 6 volt system. Then check the grounds. Make sure all the grounds are clean and tight. You should have a ground from the battery to the frame, one from the engine to the frame and one from the body to the frame. The firewall should have a stud on it for the ground cable to attach to it. If you have the old braided style ground cables they can oxidize and not be effective as a ground. Grounding is critical on an old Ford.

Braided it is. What size should the new cable gauge be on cable? And thanks for giving me some steps to follow I'm frustrated as heck What else would make the starter turn over so slow ? This is my first 40's ford and I'm having some poor luck but will not give up thanks john

6V cables should be 0 or 00 gauge wire, soldered not clamp on ends. Don't forget that the heavy amps that the starter draws goes through the solenoid. There is a disk that comes up and makes connections between the 2 large cable studs. This happens inside where you can't see if the contacts are clean or not so your troubleshooting should include eliminating the solenoid as the problem where your power loss is happening. You might try jumping around it with heavy jumper cables. 12 volt wires are way too small for any of the 6v applications. Is the starter known to be good? I agree with the idea you start at the Battery and move on from there. I had a brand new battery that was defective cause me to chase through the entire starting system before an old timer had me try to start it while he looked in the cells. Sure enough, one bubbled like it had an alka seltzer in it under load. I was out of ideas and he solved it in about 20 seconds. What we did was a "field load test"! The battery had the proper volts but had a shorted cell. It is an unfortunate fact these days that we must suspect any new part.

Is this a new restoration? Many times a ground strap is bolted to a painted chassis and the paint prevents a good contact. Was the car running OK before this problem? How are the starter motor brushes? Start with the battery and work towards the starter making sure every contact is clean and tight. Let us know how you are progressing.

Where should I go for 00 battery cables of various lengths?.. I have cleaned off all connections from and to battery and used dialectic grease on all some pretty much dirty etc .? Returned optima battery waiting for replacement. The battery would lose charge and go down to 2.40 volts. Bad cell. Would napa sell 00 cables? Thks for info appreciate John(Murphy)

My Macs catalog doesn't indicate 00 and I would be surprised if they are. Go online and buy welding cable and do your own soldering...very easy. 00 comes in black and red with red being a little more flexible, but black is very workable...

You can get the larger 6 volt cable from Napa. If you have a welding supply store in your area you can buy the cable from them and the ends from Napa and make your own cables.Some Napa stores will also make up cables for you.

thanks to everyone for great input to a loss solider on 1941ford coupe. The connections were not clean . Now they are. Paint under the cable to body. All cleaned ? Going to look for welding cable oo. Bypassing solinoid might be good idea. Do I cable in on both sides or disconnect wires and do it. Will I ruin solinoide Doing that by chance.john

If you want to test the solenoid, you just take the battery cable side off and touch and hold it against the post that goes down to the starter. You DON'T connect it with a nut. You are just jumping around it. You need to be able to disconnect it after momentarily seeing if the engine turns over at the proper speed. It will arc a little when you touch the cable to the post and you need to hold if firm. Don't let the arc startle you. You can also test the solenoid with a meter to measure the resistance and/or voltage on the starter side. I don't remember what the actual numbers are to indicate good/bad when you test with a meter. Someone will chime in with that.

You do not need 00 cables for your battery to starter connections. The 2ga cables sold for 6 volt systems work fine. Your defective battery may have been your problem all along. Use a voltmeter to check out what is bad in your system and the repair or replace the defective component. Tom

Finally got 0 cables. All three were connected to chassis. Battery, firewall, and engine. Plan to try starting tomorrow. Too cold in garage tonight. And I'm tired This is latest update. John
