Topic: 1937 Starter Support Bracket

Oldad    -- 11-23-2013 @ 1:29 PM
I am looking for a starter to oil pan support bracket for a 1937 85HP. As I read the Green Bible this should be part no. 8A 11140. Carpenter sells one for 1939-1953 but this part no. in the Green Bible is different so I doubt it would work on the '37. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The later (service replacement) piece had a slot on one end. If that's what Carpenter is selling it'll work on your 37. These brackets did not come about until 1939. i would think that is why they are called out for 1939 as the early date of usage in the Green Bible.

Thanks Kubes! I'll give it a try and if it doesn't work perhaps I can modify it.

51A-11140 was replaced with 8A-11140 see the green Fords parts book. Mac's auto parts sells the bracket also. I am not sure if the bracket was used in 37. I believe 38.

The C&G (800-2660470) shows the bracket as 51A-11150, $7. It was used up to, and thru, 1953. While it is listed as 39-53, you should have no problem with it. It has two mounting holes, one for the oil pan bolt, with the other to the starter thru bolt, which must be removed to install the bracket. The other thru bolt will hold the starter until the other can be returned.

We found that installing this starter bracket on early V-8's built prior to '39 is not always a slam/dunk. We found that the starter mounting holes were drilled/tapped in at least a couple of different positions radially at the starter mounting flange on the oil pan. On my collection of oil pans I have some with starter mounting holes at about 1 and 7 o'clock and others with holes at about 2 and 8 o'clock. One of those two combinations will not allow the standard Ford starter brackets to bolt right up as they should. I will post the Fordbarn discussion URL's here if anyone cares to read them and look at the pictures that were posted.

Bought the part from Drake. It had a larger hole for the pan bolt than for the starter bolt. No slot in either bolt hole. Required a few minutes bending to line bolt holes up. Works fine.
